People often say that being a clerk is the best job, but I beg to differ. Yes, with the 8am-530pm working hours, sitting in the office enjoying the air-con, talking cock in the office and stirring kopi do sound interesting. However, after going through for just 4months, what I can say is that it is not as easy as what you think.
Being a clerk is a mental draining job. Office politics are like a great movie playing daily. Some people treat you as a "second class citizen" if you have nothing on the front of your chest. What worse is that you have a leader that doesn't care about your welfare(even entitlement has to be controlled now), always nag around you like a buzzing bee and sounds so demanding and rude. Everyday, you have to be mentally prepared of what you are going to be bombard once you step into the office. Depends on your luck, if the person is on good mood, you are lucky. If she is on the bad side, be prepared for hell. If you are faced in this kind of situation, what can you do about it? As a personnel who doesn't have any authority other than human rights, I guess you only have one rule to follow- suck thump.
I guess it all boils down to leader. If you have a good leader which care about your welfare and well being, life would be so much better in your environment. Seriously, there is really a shortage of good leader in clerk job. If there is, there won't be so much people complaining about them in the internal forums, maybe external forums if I can find them later on. There also won't be so many clerk around you that is complaining. Tell me, where are all the motherly people out there!?!
Some positive things that I can take out from this is that it can build up your mental stress and being able to adapt to different kind of situation easily. I believe that the working environment our that is far more worst. So take this current situation as a training ground. Well it is just endurance for a period of time and that's it, right?
An interesting story about SAF.
In the year 2007, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Son 2LT Li Hongyi was charged by military law for complaining without adhering to the chain of command when making his complaint. If you are interested, do follow the link and read it. They also have the actual complain email that he sends.
